eFoiling with children – safety and fun on the water

A field report by Haiko Dehnen

eFoiling – floating above the water on an electrically powered hydrofoil board – is becoming increasingly popular among water sports enthusiasts. Children are also showing great interest in this new and exciting sport. But before your kids get on the board, there are some important things to consider, which I, as an eFoil trainer, am happy to share.

Safety comes first

If children want to ride an eFoil, they must be confident swimmers. This means that they should be able to navigate the water well without aids and not be afraid of falling into the water. In addition, an impact protection vest and a well-fitting helmet are mandatory. This protective equipment helps to prevent possible injuries – especially when practicing or making your first attempts at balancing.

Choose the right environment

Calm waters are ideal – preferably a lake that is approved for use with watercraft. Waves, strong winds, or heavy traffic from other boats and athletes are not suitable for beginners, especially children. Care should always be taken not to endanger other water sports enthusiasts. Children may be unsure of how to control the eFoil at first, so a clear, protected area is the best choice.

Step by step to success

To make rapid progress, children should start by kneeling on the board. This allows them to develop a feel for the speed, balance, and control of the eFoil without being confronted with the challenge of standing up. Only when the basic rules of eFoil riding have been mastered does it make sense for the child to slowly stand up and carefully approach hovering above the water.

When is eFoil suitable?

A good starting age is around ten years old. At this age, most children have the necessary physical coordination, strength, and concentration to handle the eFoil safely. Of course, every child is different – the important thing is that they are motivated and feel comfortable in the water.

Conclusion

eFoiling with children can be a great experience – if it is done with care, patience, and the right equipment. With a safe environment, a gradual introduction, and the necessary amount of fun, the eFoil experience will be an unforgettable adventure for children and parents alike.
